Flu and COVID-19 updates

Changes in vaccinating 5 year olds

Children who turned 5 on or after 1 September 2022 can only get a 1st and 2nd dose of a COVID-19 vaccine if they’re either:

  • at high risk due to a health condition or because of a weakened immune system
  • living with someone who has a weakened immune system

Recent changes to UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA’s) Green Book states that children who have turned 5 years old since 31st August 2022 will no longer be eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine unless they have additional eligibility factors mentioned above.

In February 2022, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) advised a one-off, non-urgent offer for children aged 5-11 years who were not in clinical risk groups to get their COVID-19 vaccination. The original JCVI recommendation in the Green Book was published here on 16th February 2022 to reflect JCVI advice. From the outset, this offer was only applicable to children who turned five years old by 31 August 2022. NHS England vaccinates in line with this guidance and eligible children who turned five by 31 August 2022 can still come forward for the jab.

The JCVI continually reviews the UK’s COVID-19 vaccination programme, including the offer to 5-11s, and any updates to its advice will be announced in due course. All children aged five years and over in clinical risk groups continue to be offered COVID-19 vaccination through the Autumn’s booster programme.

COVID-19 Autumn Boosters

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and immunisation (JCVI) has advised who should be offered a COVID-19 booster vaccine in autumn 2022. This includes:

  • residents in a care home for older adults and staff working in care homes for older adults
  • frontline health and social care workers
  • all adults aged 50 years and over
  • persons aged 5 to 49 years in a clinical risk group, as set out in the Green Book
  • persons aged 5 to 49 years who are household contacts of people with immunosuppression
  • persons aged 16 to 49 years who are carers, as set out in the Green Book

People aged 65 years old and over, frontline health and social care workers, those at higher risk or who are pregnant, and people who have or live with someone who has a weakened immune system are able to book appointments on the National Booking Service. Generic disclaimers

Please be aware Walk-in and Pop-up COVID-19 vaccination clinics may be limited to an allocated number of vaccines. Vaccines will be given on a first come, first served basis. Clinics may close early if all allocated vaccine has been used.

Please check this site regularly as walk-in clinics may be cancelled on the day due to weather disruptions; it is important that we keep the public and our staff safe.

Disclaimers for 5-15 year olds:

Parents and guardians need to attend vaccination sites with their children if they want them to get jabbed outside of school hours (for 12-15s) and consent will be sought on the day.

Please note when attending a clinic, those allowed in are the parent/guardian and the child to be vaccinated. Due to social distancing measures and spacing, we cannot let whole family members in / friends.

On arrival you will be asked to fill in a consent form – if you have your child’s NHS number please can you bring this with you as it helps our process (but don’t worry if you can’t find it)

If your child has tested positive for COVID-19 they will not be able to have the vaccine until 12 weeks after the positive date (clinically vulnerable children need to wait 28 days following a positive COVID-19 test)

There must be a 12 week gap between 1st and 2nd COVID-19 vaccinations (clinically vulnerable children need to wait 8 weeks)

Once you child has been vaccinated they need to wait 15 minutes at the clinic.

  1. Visited Tunstall VC yoday for Autumn booster. Staff were excellent snd we were cared for really well.
Only criticism was that walk in patients were dealt with ahead of patients with timed appointments. It seems to be completely pointless going on line to book an appointment when the time is adhered to and walk in patients merely join the same queue. I feel that procedure needs to be overhauled.

    1. Hi, thank you for your feedback. We have forwarded your comments directly to the Vaccination Centre and will let you know if there is any response.
